Don’t Let the Holidays Get You Down About Your Weight

Now that you finally get a break from all the delicious holiday food you might be looking in the mirror or at your cholesterol and thinking Yikes! What Happened?

For the majority of us, losing weight can be a dreaded phrase. Not many of us can eat whatever we want and barely gain a pound, and in fact many of us have such a hectic lifestyle that we find ourselves eating whatever is available and convenient without thinking about the health consequences. Unfortunately weight gain isn’t just about looks and vanity, weight gain puts your heart health at risk.

Weight gain can increase your chances to a number of chronic illness’ like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, hypertension and diabetes. Managing a healthy weight doesn’t have to be difficult, and is more convenient than you think.

One of the worst mistakes you can make while trying to lose weight is skipping a meal rather than eating something small within reach. Skipping meals deprives your body of fuel to help get you through the rest of the day, and when your body has no fuel it will start eating away at your healthy bits – like your muscle mass, which may in turn have you noticeably losing weight, but not leave you any healthier.

For every person the struggles to maintain his or her weight will be different, whether you’re looking to shed a few pounds or make a big lifestyle change for the better we always recommend working alongside your general practitioner who can monitor your progress and adjust any medication you may be on. As you already know, many common diseases are sparked by weight gain, so it’s common that when you lose weight in a healthy and guided way, your need for medication will also decrease. Our Encino nutritionist has effectively helped a number of men and women regain their health and reach their weight loss goals in a timely and effective manner, and have educated them well enough to keep the weight off for good.

Sometimes weight gain can be inhibited by hormonal changes, menopause is a common one amongst women. Your body’s natural levels can begin to fluctuate and cause stress on the body making it hard to lose weight, or habits which once worked for the body, no longer do. It’s important to understand how your body works, when you do it will be much easier for you to choose to eat better for your mind and body.

You Don’t Have to Give Up the Foods You Love

Weight loss doesn’t mean saying goodbye to carbohydrates and butter, and your decadence. It just mean shifting your purchasing and cooking in a more homegrown setting. Carbohydrates don’t only come in bread and rice, they can come in potatoes and quinoa, and zucchini squash. And YES, you can actually eat butter – just make sure it’s unpasteurized, natural butter. Dairy doesn’t have to be a thing of the past either. It’s about incorporating natural made products into your diet with as little processing as possible. None to be in fact. Cooking with coconut oil, opting for dark chocolate, there are a number of trades you can make while still enjoying decadent and tasty meals. If you’re interested in learning more we have a clinical nutritionist on hand that can best advise you alongside your weight loss goals, and help you develop a realistic meal plan.
